Hi, I'm Shon Gerber
I'm a cybersecurity professional with over 24 years in the field, and I've spent a good chunk of that time teaching and training people just like you. I've held the CISSP since 2009 — but only after failing it on my first attempt. That failure is exactly why CISSP Cyber Training exists: I built the system I wish someone had handed me back then.
I started out wanting to be an airline pilot. That dream took me into the military, where I ended up flying B-1B Bombers as a Weapons System Officer for the United States Air Force. From there, an opportunity opened up to join an elite group of military hackers — the USAF Red Team — where our job was finding the gaps in military computer systems before someone else did. I eventually became Commander of the 177th Information Aggressor Squadron, and retired after 24 years of service.
After the military, I spent the next 11 years at one of the largest multinational companies in the world, managing a Security Operations Center team of 15 analysts and serving in various Chief Information Security Officer roles. I've also been an Adjunct Professor at Wichita State University, teaching Cybersecurity Risk Management and Cyber-Physical Systems.
Today, I work as a Fractional CISO serving healthcare and financial clients, host the CISSP Cyber Training podcast, and built the "Think Like a Manager" framework that runs through everything I teach here.
Bottom line: if you want someone to hand you the test answers so you can cram through the CISSP in a couple of weeks, this isn't for you. But if you want to actually earn the certification — with real knowledge, from someone who's sat in nearly every seat in this industry — you're in the right place. You've got this.
As you can see, my career has been crazy and fun…but that is not what I am most proud of for my life. I have been incredibly blessed to be married to my gorgeous wife Trish for 30 years. God has blessed us with seven children, three biological and four born from their hearts that yearn to answer the call of “caring for the orphans.” This calling has taken us to China three times and once to Uganda. I have a grandchild, a son-in-law, future daughter in-law, and potentially another son-in-law from Sri Lanka. Lastly, Trish and I have another daughter who lives in Russia with her family and she will always have a very special place in our hearts…We love you Alsu!
